Of the many terms used in web hosting, bandwidth and data transfer are two terms you may come across most frequently. These two terms have different meanings, though closely related.
When you talk about bandwidth, it is the amount of data that can be transferred at a time.On the contrary, the amount of data that is transferred is referred to as data transfer. However while advertising their companies, web hosting companies tend to use the word bandwidth to show how much of data you can transfer with them in a month.
When you go through the plans offered by web hosting companies, you will find some of them measuring the amount of bandwidth your site can use.The company usually displays this amount as the amount of gigabytes the company will offer you.Companies offering you 5 GB per month indicate that you cannot carry out more than 5GB of data transfer in your site every month.
‘Unlimited bandwidth’ is a term most web hosting companies use to lure their customers. However you usually find many rules leading to limitations of their bandwidth after you go through the terms and conditions of the company.
A common rule you find most web hosting companies stating is the provision of unlimited bandwidth to you on the condition that your bandwidth usage is acceptable. You later find that this ‘acceptable usage’ is the usage of less than an arbitrary amount of bandwidth every month.Once you exceed this limit, you have to pay a surcharge.
Then there are some web hosting companies that pose restrictions on the type of site you can offer. Some of them don’t permit the use of graphics and heavy pages while some of them may have limitations on the number of pages you can offer on your site. This is why it is better to use these plans only if you are sure you can follow these restrictions not only in the present, but also in the future.
