There are an abundance of opportunities on the Internet for work at home moms to make extra money. Amongst these good opportunities, it is true that there are some bad ones, but letting the minority spoil the majority is never a good approach to take in any walk of life. With that in mind, lets look at five of the best ways in which work at home moms can supplement their income.

1. Freelance writing and editing. Nearly every Internet site needs content and that content needs to be written by someone – why not you? If you have a specific topic that you would like to write about, consider going online to find an electronic publication or ezine to write for. If you are able to write on a wide variety of topics, then you’ll find even more opportunities to write. To find clients, you can post on or search through classified ad sites like Craigslist or, even better, you can go to online forums for Internet marketers where you know there will be a high demand for writers.

2. Website or graphic design. Those with knowledge of Adobe Photoshop can earn money online by designing graphics for others. There are many types of graphic design, including minisites, eBook covers, WordPress themes, banners, image ads, logos, and more. If you show some creative talent and can build up a nice portfolio, you can build a long term business out of it – one that pays extremely well too.

3. Being a virtual assistant. Some people manage large businesses online which require skilled and dedicated workers to run. As a virtual assistant, your duties would include, but not be limited to, answering emails and support tickets, updating websites and databases and sending email broadcasts. So long as you have good interpersonal skills, have at least an average standard of reading and writing, and are proficient on software such as Word and Outlook, then is absolutely no reason why you couldn’t be a virtual assistant.

4. Dropshipping through eBay. It’s common knowledge that you can use eBay to make money by selling off your unwanted items, but not too many people know that it can also be used for dropshipping. This is basically where you find a supplier for a product, you list the product on eBay and, when it is sold, you forward the order to the supplier, you pay the supplier their cut out of the sale proceeds and keep the rest. This is a really great, risk free way, to make money, as the only upfront cost is that to make a listing on eBay, and you don’t have the hassle of keeping an inventory or posting items..

5. Blogging. This tends not to be result in instant cash but, as a long term model, you can easily make a passive income. Create your own WordPress blog on your own domain and create a theme for your blog. Then, pick a topic, and write a post a day about it everyday. Over time, your readership will grow and you can earn money from the various ads that you have positioned on your blog.

The Drawbacks to Being a Work at Home Mom

It’s not the least bit surprising that more women are choosing to become work at home moms instead of toiling away in an office all day.  The perks seem almost too good to be true:  you get to command your hours, and you finally get to do what you want, be it blogging for money, putting up a modest business, or just telecommuting to work instead of actually going to the office.  In fact, it sounds like the perfect solution for busy mothers who want to do justice to both their careers and their obligations to their family.

Of course, working at home isn’t all roses, as you will soon find out.  Here are some of the more common challenges that work at home moms have to overcome if they’re going to succeed in their ventures:

1.    The urge to check on the kids frequently:
This compulsion is especially strong if your kids are still very young and need supervising.  Of course, we’re not asking you to be negligent, but you’ll have to learn how to strike a healthy balance between work and your children if you’re going to get anything done within the day.  Try to get the help of a relative or a baby sitter who can look after the kids while you’re kept busy so that you don’t have to come running to them whenever you feel like they need you.

Make it a point to spend your breaks with your children so that you can still have some quality time with them.  After all, that’s the point of being a work at home mom, right?  You want to be able to give your career and your children the time that they deserve from you, so create a schedule that lets you devote yourself to work and enjoy your kids’ company, all in the same day.

2.   Distractions:
The office is a controlled environment where your boss is always just around the corner and a professional demeanor is always demanded of you.  But your home is a different story, and if you aren’t careful, you can get sucked in by a host of distractions that can jeopardize your productivity.  Try not to bustle around the house tidying it up, and forget about your chores for a bit.  You can always do your vacuuming later when you’re done with your tasks.

3.  Extra paperwork:
When you become a work at home mom, you’ll find yourself being responsible for more things.  For example, you’re going to have to take charge of practically all your bills and do some accounting, which most of you aren’t yet accustomed to.  To avoid getting overwhelmed, make sure you organize all your bills and outstanding dues and create a monthly budget.  You can even ask for some help from someone more experienced in these matters than you, and if your business necessitates it, hire an accountant to work for you once in a while.

4.  Loneliness:
While there may have been times when working at your former office did nothing but frustrate you, you must also have met people whom you ended up getting along well with, and whom you managed to interact with in very friendly terms.  When you start working at home, however, you’re left with nobody but yourself, the kids, and the occasional baby sitter.   Loneliness is one of the more challenging things to overcome when you begin working at home, especially if you thrive in professional situations where you get to mingle with other individuals from varying backgrounds.

Before you can become a work at home mom, you have to consider that such a move will work for you only if you’ve considered all its pros and cons.  It’s great to be your own boss while you make money blogging or while you manage your new business, but there are also quite a good number of drawbacks that you should prepare yourself for.  Once you have a fairly good idea of what’s ahead and how you can deal with them, you’ll find that being a work at home mom is an endeavor that’s enjoyable and profitable at the same time.

The Perks of Being a Work at Home Mom

Tired of sitting around in your office desk, waiting for the time when you can clock out so you can finally go home to your family? Do you find yourself worrying a lot about how your kids are doing, or are you raring to change your career path to a place where you’re in charge? If so, why don’t you try being a work at home mom? More and more women these days are opting out of the traditional office set-up to become work at home moms, and a lot of them have met a high rate of success, whether they started blogging for money, managing their own business, or just telecommuting to work.

In any case, working at home has its definite advantages, especially for moms who are juggling their jobs and their responsibilities to their families:

1. Big savings on gas and commuting expenses: How many times have you complained about what a hassle it is to get to work? Although some people can easily walk to their offices, majority of office workers either commute or bring their cars to work, both of which add to a family’s monthly expenses. Commuting is a hassle, and driving a car and paying for gas parking is incredibly costly. One of the best things about working at home is that you won’t have to go through the inconvenience of commuting or driving to your office — after all, your office desk is now in your very own home, literally steps away from where you are.

2. You can spend breaks with the young ‘uns: Moms who work in an office often wish that they could spend more time with their children, especially because they end up getting too tired at the end of each day. Weekends never seem to last long enough, either. When you choose to work at home, however, you get to see your kids more and spend more quality time with them. Take advantage of your breaks by playing with your tots, going out for a short walk with them, or fixing them a few sandwiches and a pitcher of juice. Not a lot of moms can be as lucky!

3. Saving on daycare One of the best things about being a work at home mom is the fact that you don’t have to rely on a day care center to make sure that your kids are taken care of while you’re working at your desk. Now that your kids are close by, you can check on them as needed to see whether or not they’re having a good, safe time with each other. If you’re headed towards a particularly busy day, you can ask for some help from a baby sitter or a relative who has some free time to spare. That way, you don’t have to shuttle to and from your kids and your tasks.

4. You get to explore your strengths, career-wise, and do what you love the best A lot of moms manage to discover their strengths when they strike out on their own, since they’re forced to be more resourceful, quick-thinking, and innovative. Ultimately, they also find what they love doing the best: some moms make money blogging, while other can finally attend to their own startup businesses. Whatever your work turns out to be, it always feels good to be in charge of your career and whipping up a cool, sustainable profit from your efforts.

The reason why more mothers are choosing to work at home are varied, but one thing is certain: working at home can help moms strike a good balance between work and family, as well as help them expand their professional horizons. If you think that being a work at home mom is the best tactic for you to take, why not consider your options? It might just be your best career move yet.
